BLOG POST #3- BRANCHES OF THE U.S. GOVT.
1. Find 3 articles about the 3 branches of the Constitution.
-these articles can be about the same branch
-these articles can also be about different branches
-ARTICLES MUST BE FROM AFTER FEBRUARY 1, 2013
2. Summarize and synthesize these articles
-write one summary that synthesizes the articles
-What collective conclusion can you make about these branches based on what you see?
-What's happening today in the United States government based on these articles?
-DO NOT SUMMARIZE ARTICLES SEPARATELY
-CITE SPECIFIC EXAMPLES FROM EACH ARTICLE
3. Evaluate the three branches of government as part of your 150-250 word summary
-Based on what you read in your articles, how is the United States government working?
-Effective? Failing? Meeting expectations of the Constitution?
***YOU SHOULD COMBINE IDEAS FROM #2 AND #3 INTO A 150-250 WORD POST***
***DON'T FORGET TO INCLUDE YOUR ARTICLES AT THE TOP OR BOTTOM OF YOUR POST***
BLOG POST IS DUE BY MIDNIGHT ON FRIDAY, MARCH 15.

The three articles I choose are about same-sex marriage in the United States. They are talking about how gay marriage should be allowed in the United States because everyone should be treated equal. President Obama has stated that “At a certain point I've just concluded that, for me personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married”. These articles talk about how gay marriage will get its day in court and eventually end up in the Supreme Court. Later this month the Supreme Court will hear arguments on two gay marriage laws. These articles also talk about California’s Proposition 8 that took place in 2008 which bans gay marriage in the state. This law however has already been struck down in two lower courts but has remained in force as the case has worked its way up the judicial system. The 14th Amendment also comes into play in these articles when they talk about “equal protection” which prevents states from defining marriage as only between a man and a woman. They also talk about how California is the only state that first accepted gay and lesbian marriages and then banned them saying that their marriages were illegal. There are currently six states same-sex marriages are legal. These states are Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, New York, New Hampshire and the District of Columbia. Washington, Maryland and New Jersey have taken a vote on this topic earlier this month but the vote has not taken effect yet. Overall, it seems that gays and lesbians are slowly gaining more rights and will be able to get married in more states over the years.

http://articles.washingtonpost.com/2013-02-24/politics/37276098_1_furloughs-budget-cuts-legislative-branch-agencies
All three of these articles talk about the legislative branch and their new decisions regarding spending cuts and budget cuts in the government and large corporate companies in the United States to try to get better tax revenue and to be able to save more than 9 billion dollars in the near future. While all of them talk about how they will “pinch” the money and try to save some money in different places of the government, but one of them talks about police cuts to try to save money. This can be a much debated topic because while saving a large amount of money is great, putting more people in danger of crimes and criminals due to the decreased amount of officers and equipment in the police departments. What is happening in the government with this topic is the legislative branch (Senate and House of Rep.) is that both of these houses are trying to pass some laws that would enforce these budget cuts so that they could pass them to the executive branch (president) to get passed or vetoed. I can conclude that the legislative branch is doing its job in passing laws and trying to come up with new solutions to the problems that the United States faces.

http://www.csmonitor.com/Commentary/Opinion/2013/0213/Debate-on-gun-control-should-ask-whether-Congress-has-power-to-regulate
The congress which is part of the legislative branch is working on gun control laws. The white is pushing them to try to get an assault rifle ban out soon as possible but the odds are against them. The republicans are trying to get the bill amended because they see possible issues with some people who live in dangerous areas like close to the border having problems and not being able to protect themselves. If this bill were to be passed there is no doubt that it will be accepted by the president. They are also working on trying to get stricter gun trafficking laws and better background checks for people buying guns. Obama has been pushing gun control more and more ever since he was re-elected but with gun control being such a debatable topic theirs a good chance that nothing will get done or just some stricter rules on buying and selling guns.

DeleteThe three articles explain how each person supports same sex marriage. “A day after Speaker Michael Madigan pronounced the gay marriage bill 12 votes short, a group pushing the issue tried to recapture momentum by announcing support from seven Illinois Democratic congressmen.” Even though it didn’t pass they want gay marriage to pass. “The federal Defense of Marriage Act violates equal protection guarantees in the Fifth Amendment's Due Process Clause, as applied to same-sex couples legally married under the laws of their own state.” “Portman Thursday told reporters from several Ohio newspapers that when his son, Will, 21, informed him that he was gay two years ago. So the U.S senator Rob Portman of Ohio supports gay marriage because of his son. The conclusion I can make is that in our society it’s now more accepting in same sex marriage but yet it’s still not passing in some states. The other conclusion that I can make is that these articles are about the executive and legislative branch. So now they are probably trying to pass same sex marriage in more states that’s what happening in our government today.

My first article is about the legislative branch and their view on the budget for 2013.They talked about how they are happy and things are looking up for this country. Some state legislatures though like for the state of Utah aren't as happy, as Utah has received budget cuts. Education is getting an increase as they have made it their priority to make education #1. My second article is the Judicial branches point of view. They are not as happy. The supreme court has received budget cuts that will make their jobs a lot harder. They said though that they will not get hit as hard as the federal courts will. There budget has gone down 3%. The executive branch on the other hand believes that the budget as well will allow this country to benefit. They support Obama and his decisions. This shows that our govt. is getting better and we are starting to get along better but that we still have some disagreements.

All The articles are about the same thing, Burglary. The three branches deal with this problem in their own ways. The legislative branch tries to make laws or find a solution to the problem. The Judicial branch will take the people that were found stealing in any way to court and judging by how serious the crime was will be based on their amount of years they will have to serve. The Executive is more different from the two other branches, but only because the president has different ways to address this to citizens. If the crime was serious enough to the point of every bank account in the U.S. was going to be stolen from (which I'm sure if highly unlikely)the president may have conferences or show up in random places in the U.S. to let the citizens know that the problem is under control, in other words the president will make sure that the citizens can feel calm and safe during times like this.

These three articles are about how our nation is either spending or ways to reducing spending $$. The articles are referring to the Legislative Branch of the government. That Branch includes the H.o.R. and the Senate. These groups are coming together to decide and vote upon the decision of their nation’s spending. Each group has to come to a compromise in order to benefit even ones thoughts, and needs. Each Article I have chosen has to do with the Legislative Branch (aka Congress). Currently in our government, one of the big things being discussed is where all the money goes. Congress wants it to go to the govt. to keep them strong. The US govt. is NOT working well at all right now. The national debt under President Obama is almost, if not more than tripled sense his take into office. Thus, the drastic need for where the money goes. From my personal view, our govt. works. But, not as effective as it could be, the nation needs a govt. where it doesn’t let the scum of society thrive off of govt. checks in the mail each month. Doing that has the people “lose” the drive to look for work (why work? When you can sit and get paid paid for being pathetic). Thus, our govt. currently = poop.

Right now the fight for gay marriage is very controversial in the U.S.A and it has finally gotten to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court is obviously doing a good job protecting people’s rights and this signifies that they are doing what needs to be done. Using these articles as examples you can see that the American government is working how it should be and not failing. It is efficient and working how it should. The Supreme Court has done well following the constitution and what it says but still tweaks it to where necessary which is good. One article is about the actual Supreme Court and how they are doing with the gay marriage case where the other two are about republican’s opinion and the executive branches opinion so basically just Obama. So as you can see the American government is doing well and should obviously keep up the great work.
Gay marriage is a huge issue; the Supreme Court Justices are expected to make a decision on the Defense of Marriage act sometime in June. Hilary Clinton who works with the executive branch is all for gay marriage, even Ohio Senator Rob Portman now is in favor of same sex marriage, learning that his son his gay. Clinton said, "Like so many others, my personal views have been shaped over time by people I have known and loved." Post polls show us that today 58% of people believe that gay marriage should be legal, where in 2004 it was only 32%.
ReplyDeleteThe American government is working efficiently; they are working towards figuring out fair laws/bills for everyone. With more executive and legislative people changing their opinions on gay marriage it’s a sure thing that eventually everything should work out in their favors.

DeleteGay marriage is a big controversial debate that is going on right now. In my three articles it explains different people’s ideas on gay marriage. Hilary Clinton put out an article saying she fully supports it from friends and family. Also a representative from Texas was putting his ideas out. He was said the ban on gay marriage is on its ways to the “dust bin”. Then the third article vice president Biden is showing his views as long with Obama. They both are with the idea that it should be legalized and it’s their choice if they want to marry the same sex then they are able to. All three of these articles show that gay marriage should be legalized in all states. Three big people in our country are against the law and we should agree with them. It is wrong to not let 2 individuals get married just because they are the same sex.

http://www.christianpost.com/news/the-supreme-court-and-same-sex-marriage-part-1-91995/
Same sex marriage has been a debatable topic for several years and no one can seem to get satisfaction from it. The biggest violation that same sex marriage is affecting, is their right to the first amendment, you know, the thing that gives us rights and freedom as not only as a human but a society. politicians all over the country have been in argument over this topic and no one can come to an agreement it seems. Currently 10 states legalized and support same-sex marriage. The rate and amount that each state has been supporting same-sex has been rapidly growing.
Our first amendment is to ensure the freedom of speech and religion of Americans. Obviously we have been abusing this right to millions if not billions of Americans. As a human being we should have the right to have free choice, other people shouldnt be jumping down eachothers throat about their decisions. Supreme court, Judicial, and Legislative branch have been slightly succeeding with same-sex marriage but, over all we have been failing to give people their rights. We as a country need to have more choice.

All of these articles are about the same sex marriage which has been a specific piece of the United States and of the world for a really long time, these people who some are from the government and even they want to help and support the same sex marriage because they also know that each single person has rights to fall in love with whoever they want to.
If the people that are Gay or lesbian and have the same sex marriage and we stop them from doing this, we are breaking the first amendment which is that everyone has a freedom of speech which the US Government look really bad about themselves.

For my branch of government I decided to do the legislative branch, during the first article they talked about making a one trillion dollar coin to try and help us out of debut, during the second article they talked about how Obama talked about us all coming together and while some republicans didn't want to they are willing to work with him, The last article talked about wanting to impeach the president if he keeps trying to make gun laws, All three article's are on different parts of what the legislative branch does. They show how they do checks and balance by watching the president and some wanting to impeach him, While other parts try to get us out of debut by making a new coin. All these happen in the legislative branch and need to happen so our country can run successfully

All three branches are involved in gun control. Whether to have gun control or not has been a very controversial debate and all three branches are working on solutions. Obama is part of the executive branch and working on making gun control laws. Obama wants stricter gun control laws especially since the Newtown shooting and when Gabrielle Gifford’s (former Arizona representative) got shot in the head two years ago. The senate is part of the legislative branch, and there have been a lot of disagreements on what to do about gun control in this branch. The last branch is the judicial branch, and Courts are also involved in the gun control debate. Since there has been so much disagreement on what to do about gun control, a lot of these issues will have to be settled in the courts. I think that there needs to be change in the government structure so there can be resolutions quicker.

http://www.miamiherald.com/2013/03/18/3293228/supreme-court-agrees-to-hear-sierra.html
Reading through various articles, I came across these three that stood out. Each article is discussing the Supreme Court and their role on society; whether it be same sex marriage, requirements on voting, or a forest planning debate the Justices of the Supreme court have a huge decision to make that can set the pathway for many years to come. The decision that the Judges make just to hear the trial is a big deal in itself because they will have to reevaluate decisions made in past years by other courts and themselves. As gay support rises throughout the United States, the government is now taking into consideration things they never would have years ago; giving rights to the growing gay and lesbian population. The Supreme Court also has to make the decision on how to keep voting laws strict within reason. They need to decide if states should be able to ask for additional proof they are citizens of the United States. This proves, as time goes on the judges have to make decisions based on what they think best for the United States as a whole, not based off of decisions that have been made in previous years. The three branches of government each work in separate ways to form together our system. Each branch has specific roles that make our system as fair and equal as possible. The Legislative branch deals with passing laws. The executive branch deals with the President and the decisions he has to make. The judicial branch enforces, and decides if laws are constitutional. The government could be more effective by taking every case that was filed into the Supreme Court, which is impossible, so I believe our system is working well. It is orderly but gives the people power as well leading to why it is constitutional.

My articles are about how congress is trying to make laws to control guns. Congress is being asked by the white house to include an assault weapons ban in their law. One side sees some issues that could arise with people that live in dangerous areas not being able to have guns to protect themselves. congress is working on getting improved background checks, and tougher gun trafficking laws for people who want to purchase and own a gun.

All three of these articles support same-sex marriage. There is without a doubt a positive change in supporters for same-sex marriage; for the first time ever, polls showed that more people supported it than opposed it. This demonstrates how people have changed from then to now. Senator Rob Portman changed his mind on gay marriage once he was informed his own son was gay and now supports it. He wanted to give his son the same opportunities as everyone else. Portman’s evolution on this issue highlights the promise of the United States which is the right of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Just like Portman, Barack Obama believes same-sex couples should have the right to get married. He fully shows how completely supportive he was to the matter on same-sex marriage when he said, “Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law.” This journey won’t be easy, because the Supreme Court will hear disagreements on two gay-marriage laws. The first law has to do with Section 3 of the federal Defence of Marriage Act, which denies different kinds of federal benefits and tax breaks to married same-sex couples. The other law is California's Proposition 8, which is a ballot with the purpose of banning gay marriage in the state; this had been previously struck down in two lower courts, but prevailed in force as the case worked its way up the judicial system. Digging deep into these laws there are various flaws that can cause people to argue against them. One is that multiple people encounter it as a hindrance to keep separate tax records under DOMA. Two is that there are campaigners that believe all gay-marriage bans infringe the equal-protection clause of the 14th amendment of the constitution, and they desire that the Supreme Court strike down Prop 8 on those aspects. But neither of these disputes would have marked an overpowering to the White House. There was still another choice though; it had to do with an argument about California previously allowing same-sex marriages and that by removing a right that had been granted to homosexuals meant that “Proposition 8 serves no purpose, and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gay men and lesbians in California." The court didn’t accept the law because of this reason. With all this you can tell that society is becoming more accepting and that the issue is progressing further. And with this struggle you can see that all three branches take a part in overcoming this issue.

These two articles talk about the development of laser weapons in the military and that they are ready to be deployed in places such as Iran for things such as antiaircraft and disruptors. There is much controversy over these weapons because while there are many pros, such as once it is built and paid for, it only costs around $1 to fire it; there are also a lot of cons because they are very expensive to build, very difficult to transport them and that they are very new technology so that there is bound to be problems and fault with these new weapons. Lastly we have to ask ourselves if this new technologically advanced weapon will help the U.S.A. by destroying many different kinds of aircraft, or would it bring a new type of warfare out onto the world because this has not been experimented in a real world situation yet.
