The collapse of an eight story garment factory in Rana Plaza on the outskirts of Dhaka on April 24th killed at least 400 people and injured many more. This was the worst industrial accident in South Asia since the Bhopal disaster in 1984and worst ever seen in garment industry. Local police and an industry association had warned that the building was unsafe. The owners responded by threating to fire people who did not carry on working as usual. “Bangladeshi governments of all stripes, which have made only rudimentary attempts to enforce the national building code, especially against politically well-connected landlords. With luck, the laws will now be applied, but nobody expects much.” Therefore on the multinational companies whose orders from local factory owners have led to the rapid recent growth of the garment industry in Bangladesh the world’s second-largest exporter of clothing after China. Familiar brands now stand accused of exploiting poorly paid workers with a callous product were found in the rubble at Rana Plaza-Primark, as a cheap British label, and Canada’s Loblaw, whose brands include Joe Fresh-have rapidly promised compensation to victims and their families. On April 18 the day before Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was captured as a suspect in the bombing at the Boston Marathon, a friend from the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth posted photos of them together on VKontakte, the Russian social network. “The photos, posted under the account of Dias Kadyrbayev, a 19-year-old Kazakh, offer a glimpse into the relationship between Mr. Kadyrbayev and Mr. Tsarnaev, which began after they enrolled as freshmen in the fall of 2011.” The authorities said they grew closer and traveled to New York City with another friend who was also a citizen of Kazakhstan and a student at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. They posed a group picture in time square.” On Wednesday, Mr. Kadyrbayev and Mr. Tazhayakov were arrested on federal charges of conspiring to obstruct justice and destroy evidence”.

The first article I found has to do with dark skinned American’s feelings towards the owners of farming plantations. They believe that they are being treated unfairly when it comes to the amount of hours and pay they are receiving. Workers claim that people of the Mexican race are being favored over them in the amount of work given. Some say it is because the Mexican workers are frightened and will do anything the owners tell them to. The circumstances for the black workers are similar to the one’s the blacks faced in the late 1950’s. Now, there is less cruelty to the African American people but even in 2013 black people are fighting for their rights, in this case it is work. The black people in the 50’s faced many difficulties dealing with things like the Jim Crow Laws which prohibited blacks from marrying whites and separated them in many ways such as school, bathrooms, buses and even water fountains. The second article is speaking of an event that took place recently. A group of LGBT, or lesbian gay bisexual and transgender individuals, were banned from entering a Catholic Church because their hands were “soiled” they would have been charged with criminal trespassing upon entering. This event is similar to a few that took place in the late 50’s. The nine students black students who attended Little Rock High School were harassed on their way to school every day and were told not to enter the school. The students were insulted thoroughly by hundreds of protesters such as white parents of the white children that attended Little Rock. The LGBT group was stripped of their First Amendment right which is the freedom of religion, just as the black children were stripped of their rights during the Civil Rights Movement.

    1. The first article recalls the massive discrimination that happened 60 year ago against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. It mentioned how the government would be against these groups of people and that they would fire them even if they were qualified for job. Even LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Transgender) private sector workers who were under contract with the federal government were also fired or forced to resign. This outcome was caused by an executive order by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on April 27, 1953. This immense discrimination against these people decreased over decades of activism. Today 94% of the top hundred companies in the U.S. and the top 50 federal contractors and the top 50 Fortune 500 companies have policies ceasing discrimination based on sexual orientation. In addition, discrimination against gender identity has also improved, now 78% of the companies have policies prohibiting it. But still, many American voters assume that there are at present laws protecting LGBT employees in the workplace, just like policies for women, people with disabilities, racial minorities, or people with particular religious alliances. However that is not exactly right, in 29 states an employee could still be fired for being gay. Moreover, in 34 states, transgender or gender non-conforming groups of people can be fired too.

    2. My next article correlates to my first article; this one is about a Catholic school teacher, fired for being gay. In March, Carla Hale a teacher at Bishop Watterson High School in Columbus, Ohio lost her job for "violating the morality clause." This teacher was supported by more than 100 students and other people of the community. A man named Bill Clarson said, “When you see how they've treated the priests who had molested children, for them to fire a wonderful teacher who'd done nothing wrong is just plain wrong!" There had been a meeting set up to start a support campaign for Carla Hale. As a result, students, alumni and friends started to protest the firing in many ways. They created a Facebook page and an online petition that now contains over 100,000 signatures. The supporters also arranged rallies and pickets. On Friday tons of Watterson students picketed the Columbus Catholic diocese office. They even distributed buttons with the Bishop Watterson logo and an equality sign transposed on it. They didn’t stop there; the supports did so much more in fighting for Carla’s case.

    3. All things considered, there is a strong connection between the discrimination against colored people to LGBT groups of people. My articles acknowledge the unfair treatment against LGBT employees. In my first article it mentions how their situation has improved over the years of activism. Blacks were as well treated unjustly, and through dauntless actions they have improved their situation. Those actions involved many forms of protesting, and it has resulted greatly in their favor today that colored people are treated equally as white people and that the majority of people are non-racist. My second article illustrates the different ways of protesting. Many of those ways were as well utilized by colored people to send out their messages. The protests from the supporters of the catholic school teacher and the protest of the blacks have a huge thing in common; these protests are trying to change something they believe is wrong. My second article had a quote by a guy named Bill Clarson and he claimed “When you see how they've treated the priests who had molested children, for them to fire a wonderful teacher who'd done nothing wrong is just plain wrong!" Bill’s statement is really similar to the history of colored people; there had been many blacks, who had done nothing wrong, that were punished, while many whites who had committed many awful things against them, left free and unpunished. Through both articles you can make many great connections to the history of blacks.

    1. My two articles are about the economic crisis that is going on in the world today. This relates to what were talking about in class because when the African Americans were freed from slavery they all started out with little to no money and needed to get into sharecropping. Also they all struggled for awhile just like the economy is doing now. My first article shows the economic struggles throughout the world. It shows that this has been a problem fro decades but recently has gotten worse. The recent crisis has caused some of the top European companies to totally collapse and shut down. It also caused all companies to loose 33% of what they were worth. This was almost 15.5 trillion dollars. Also 14.5 % of all companies went bankrupt.
My second article was about the U.S economy and how it is beginning to slip. Most people don’t know about the recent slip in the economy but some say we secretly became a second world country. We no longer produce the amount of supplies to sustain ourselves with trade and money. We have became so far in debt that its beginning to get out of hand. We need to do something fast.

These two articles are both on the topic of gay marriage in Minnesota; this is a very debated topic because although many agree with it and think it’s a good idea because people have the right to per sue happiness. While on the other hand, it says that it is a sin in the bible. While both on the topic of gay marriage in Minnesota, they are in two different parts of the cycle in making this a law, while the one is on just a vote, while the other is trying to pass and vote on the law in congress. In my own opinion, this law should be passed and be legal because everyone has the rights to per sue happiness as told in the
U.S. constitution giving rights to all of its citizens.

My two links are about LGBT community and how things have changed and developed. Everyday more and more people come out as part of the LGBT community from your friend at school to a professional basketball player. The links also talk about how the world around us and The people in the United States are starting to accept people for who they are and support the LGBT movement to have same sex marriage legalized. There are also business that are supporting the LGBT movements. Also Obama has been the first president who supports same sex marriage. In Canada same sac marriage has been legal sense 2005 and 72% of LGBT members said they feel more comfortable in their work place now. This relates to the topic of African American rights and the civil rights movement. African Americans were also not accepted at first due to their skin color but as time went on people soon began to accept them and despite the whites who fought against it African Americans were given the same rights as whites which I feel they should. No matter what race, community, or Desire, we are all equal and all deserve the same rights to be free.

    http://www.lgbtleaders.org/

My two articles talk about LGBT. LGBT stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender. It is an organization for people who are open about themselves and who they are and are fighting for their rights. This organization is fighting for their rights for same sex marriage. Some say that it is wrong and that it is against the bible. However, it is also questioned that it is unconstitutional. Everyone has the right to pursue happiness and if that means being able to marry someone you love of the same sex then so be it. No LGBT person should experience discrimination in employment, housing, or in businesses and public places, or the suppression of their free expression or privacy rights. LGBT people also want to put an end to discrimination, the ACLU is seeking both to change the law and to convince Americans that sexual orientation and gender identity discrimination is wrong. This relates to what we have learned in class about African Americans and their struggles. African Americans have been discriminated against and segregated until the Civil Rights Movement took action. They were treated poorly and didn’t have equal rights. Martin Luther King Jr. was their leader and would lead them in a non-violence protest to stand up for their rights. Their rights were being violated and they wanted to be treated equally. Like the Civil Rights Movement, LGBT people are non-violent in their protests. I believe that over time same sex marriage will be legalized and people will stop judging and discriminating them. It may have taken awhile but today all races are equal and we respect one another. There is no segregation or discrimination on someone’s skin color. It may take some time but over time people will become more accepting to lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and even transgenders and think nothing of it. No LGBT person should have limited rights. They should be equal and be able to marry whomever they wish no matter what their sex preference may be.

  10. In the seventies hippies loved to do drugs. Many hippies smoked weed, and did LSD while some resorted to just drinking. On the west coast a man, Ken Kesey was an important figure in promoting the recreational use of psychotropic drugs, especially acid or also known as LSD. Kesey became a magnet for media attention that drew even more people to this fledgling movement. The reason these people were doing drugs was for a spiritual experience, not just for a good “trip.” Forty years later states are legalizing Marijuana. Now that up to an ounce of recreational marijuana is legal for adults in Colorado, police departments are experiencing a problem. Their drug sniffing dogs, once these dogs are trained to find marijuana they will look for it no matter if its legal of not. District 8 district attorney Cliff Riedle says “SO not the issue was, do we have probable cause to believe there’s an illegal substance in the car, when one of the things the dog is alerting to might be a legal substance under state law.” They may have probable cause to search for the drugs, but may come across evidence in a completely different issue or case. Judges may rule the evidence isn’t admissible in court because it was obtained during and illegal search.

    http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/05/13/18228931-minnesota-senate-passes-same-sex-marriage-bill?lite
The Articles are about same sex Marriage and its hard time trying to be accepted in today’s society. The proposal of this bill to allow same sex couples has been traveling around the US for quite a long time. Some states are allowing the bill to pass, while others aren’t. The bill is mostly about equal rights for all citizens. To allow them to marry whoever they want (boy or girl). These articles relate to class, because it has a strong type of topic as the civil rights movement. As we learned in class African American citizens from the US felt they were not equal to the other part of the community (whites). The African Americans and the Gay community of our time are both fighting for equal rights. Just like the civil rights movement. The Gay community is winning their rights state by state. The topics being shown here are perseverance and strength in numbers. Perseverance is from where the Gay Community is able to push through and keep trying to earn their rights, even though they have a strong force going against them. Just like the African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement. Strength in number comes into mind, because the Gay Community has a strong opponent as well as a strong portion of the US population supporting them. Just like the African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement.

    http://www.boston.com/lifestyle/health/mysteries/2013/05/could_the_new_h7n9_chinese_bird_flu_reach_boston.html

My two atricles are about the new H7N9 virus or the bird flu. This virus is spreading in China where it has killed 36 people. The only cure to treating this virus was Tamiflu which is a pill in a class of drugs called neuraminidase inhibitors. The virus has now become resistant to the drug. The doctors have witnessed in some patients that the virus was so resistant to the point where it overpowered the drug and worsened the virus. H7N9 virus in the patients' throats, blood, stools and urine which shows that this virus could spread in more ways then the average virus, because up to this point it is not known whether it is spread from person to person. Doctors say it is very possible for an infected person to reach america, but again, they don't know if it spreads by person. This virus has infected hundreds of people(all in China). Many of them infected back in February and those people are still getting treated. If it does spread by person, and it reaches other parts of the world doctors said it could become one of the biggest epidemics the world has ever seen.
